Imagine … Monty Python: And Now for Something Rather Similar
We had the pleasure of Mr’s Cocker, Douglas and Yentob for yet another Imagine and this one is dear to our hearts featuring the talents of Monty Python..
From Scotland With Love
Made entirely of Scottish film archive, a journey into our collective past, the film explores universal themes of love, loss, resistance, migration, work and play. Ordinary people, some long since dead, their names and identities largely forgotten, appear shimmering from the depth of the vaults to take a starring role.
Brilliantly edited together, these silent individuals become composite characters, who emerge to tell us their stories, given voice by King Creosote’s poetic music and lyrics.
The Battle for Stonehenge: A Culture Show Special
Stonehenge is our most famous prehistoric monument; a powerful symbol of Britain across the globe. But all is not well with the sacred stones. MPs have described the surrounding site as a ‘national disgrace’ and ‘shameful shambles’.
Now, after decades of disputes over what should be done, English Heritage has just 12 months to create a setting that this unique monument deserves. But Stonehenge is more than a tourist attraction; it is also a temple.
In this hour-long Culture Show special, Alastair Sooke shows that Stonehenge has long been a place of conflict and controversy, and that passions still run high at the monument where druids, archaeologists and scientists all battle for the soul of Stonehenge
Britain’s Benefit Tenants
Britain is facing a new crisis in the private rented housing market.
Competition for social housing is soaring; with renters having to wait for council properties for years on end, they are being forced to turn to the private market. As a consequence, nearly two million people are falling behind on payments or finding rent a constant struggle.
There are now more people renting from private landlords than local councils or housing associations. In some areas of the country specialist letting agencies have sprung up, as the middle man between the tenants and the landlords.
The face of private rentals is changing fast and this programme meets those on the front line dealing with these tricky tenants.
The programme follows the work of two agencies: Castledene, who deal with the housing benefit end of the market, and Beanstalk Lettings, who help landlords with difficult tenants.
These two agencies are at the front line of Britain’s social housing crisis as they confront anti-social behaviour, rent arrears and trashed properties.
A Play, a Pie and a Pint
The groundbreaking lunchtime theatre at Oran Mor, a renovated former church in the West End of Glasgow, celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. The visionary behind the concept was producer David MacLennan, who dedicated his life to advancing Scottish theatre with both 7:84 and Wildcat.
Robbie Coltrane, David Hayman, Liz Lochhead and Bill Paterson are among the dazzling cast paying tribute to him and celebrating the success and the phenomenal global outreach of A Play, a Pie and a Pint.
